RTè News : PYRITE- new homes to be demolished

RTè  News (6-1) on 9th June 2014 “Six family homes demolished after pyrite found in building blocks”

In the following report by George Lee from 9th June 2014 the “appalling vista” of a re-occurrence of pyrite in new construction projects is discussed. Six newly-built houses in an estate of 25 local authority dwellings are being demolished at the moment- apparently just one of a number of recent developments affected by pyrite in blockwork. This news report suggests that the re-building costs may not be funded by the taxpayer- negotiations are ongoing with contractor and insurers. The decision to demolish the remaining 19 has not been determined.

Spokesman for the Construction Industry Federation Tom Parlon suggests that the recent pyrite experience of engineers and architects should  “…(make) best use of that experience and abiding by new regulations will make sure we wont have such a problem into the future“.

No further comments are made in connection with recent pyrite cases in blockwork and the impact on consumer rights and professional liabilities in the new building regulations, introduced in March 2014.
